The Conspirator Set

When I got to Savannah I was reminded that Robert Redford was in town shooting a movie called “The Conspirator”  It is a story of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.  People told us if you see a square closed off...they are probably shooting.  So, today we went on a search...and found nothing.  Then, by complete accident we stumbled upon the set!  It was too cool!

The extras were hanging around waiting to be called and were all super fun and friendly.  The kids had a lot of fun hearing all the behind the scenes stories.

We thought this Lamborghini must belong to Robert Redford.  Then, we had a big laugh at how they ‘disguised’ this telephone pole to look like a tree.  In fact, one of our favorite stories was of a person who lived on the square but would not turn off his electric light!  It was a BIG problem!

They filled the streets in with mulch to look like dirt roads.  When they shot the scene they brought in smoke machines to make the look of ‘dust’ and to “hide” Savannah...because this story takes place in WASHINGTON DC!  LOL!  Apparently they transformed a local church into Fords Theatre.

Any item that may be  in the shot, but is not ‘period’ had to be covered up, like this bench that would be visible in the scene.

The first scene  was shot was inside the house.  We were told “Mr. Redford can hear you out here, I know it is a public area, but can you try to keep it down?”  That was while we were hoopin’ it up with the ‘extras’—

The second scene all the extras were put in place.  So, that was a lot of fun to see them jump to position.  They all had to be walking around in the square as I guess ‘towns people’…then, these four guys ride up to the house and one of them hollers “(a name) git out here!”  So, when you see that scene in the movie—WE WERE THERE!  It was very interesting to see the way they film a movie.  It is all done in little bits and pieces and very short filming blurps.

I took a lot of pictures of Bob Redford, but with no flash and distance this was as good as it got.  Which was pretty good.  I don’t have a zoom lens...yet.

There he is!

Tomorrow we head north...we heard the hanging scene will be shot starting Monday at Fort Pulaski!  We are really tempted to stay!!  It was a great, great trip!
