Skidaway Island State Park

After Wormsloe, we went to Skidaway Island State Park, which I call Skidrow Park.  It amuses me.  Anyhow, we stopped at Subway and picked up a sandwich, and after a little iphone consultation we decided to go to Skidaway—Why?  Why you ask??  Well, when we read the description of the park...and I quote “A giant ground sloth replica”—and, in case you didn’t tune in before, I have a SLIGHT obsession with sloths…(and Tubby’s) but, the sloth is a creature of great interest to me.  But a GIANT prehistoric sloth replica?  How can one resist?  So, we headed to the picnic area first.  Above, you see how we started our picnic.  Then, suddenly we were overcome by…’see-ems’...which must be different from “no see-ems” because we could actually see ‘em...so we moved to the car.

Oddly, we never really established WHY the replica of the sloth was there.  We imagine it was because sloths were found in that region, but you may notice they never ACTUALLY say that.  So, it is entirely possible they never were here, and they just thought...hey...let’s make a giant sloth replica...perhaps they were as obsessed with sloths as me...hard to say.

Before we went on the nature trial, we enjoyed the nature center where we not only saw the giant sloth replica, but we saw many fossils from lots of creatures.  It was cool for the kids to see pictures of trilobites, which we had just found on our fossil tour.  We also found a poster about Right Whales along the GA coast, and enjoyed seeing LOTS of animals native to this area, including an alligator.  And, NO Audrey is NOT getting one.

The nature trail was marked with several sites along the way.  The bogs and the fiddler crabs were really cool to see.  There were lots of birds, but the one that we did not see was the painted bunting.  We did really look for him though!!  Audrey became obsessed with finding bobcat tracks, and we are pretty sure on several occasions we did see some since they were off the main path in areas dogs probably would not go.  Hmmmmmm.

Clearly the highlight of our nature trail walk was watching the ‘earth move, under our feet’ as the fiddler crabs would evacuate into their various mounds.  They are so cute to watch!  It was a good way to spend the afternoon with kids.
