Today the kids and I made a very cool discovery while moving an azalea bush in my front yard...a Rough Earth Snake. These NON venomous snakes live underground and dine on all the things we hate as gardeners...namely slugs and grubs! Of course, they also do a fair share of dining on earth worms as well. Here are some cool things we learned. Rough Earth snakes are very common in VA. They look like earthworms (don’t they?) and only grow to be about a foot long. We seemed to have uncovered a nest of them, as we pulled out 7 before putting in the new boxwood—which we deposited them back under—(hope they like the new digs!)...also, they don’t strike or bite, they actually cannot open their mouths big enough to bite a human. We thought these were VERY cool! |
