On day three we started the day Spencer’s favorite way, with a hike in the rainforest. He was not happy when we headed up a nearby fresh water stream in search of animals. We did see a toucan, which we have since learned it one of the most destructive, mean birds of the rainforest. Their beaks are serrated, so when they bite you, they saw your skin like a bread knife! They use their beaks to destroy other birds babies! No toucan Sam’s here!! Farther up the stream we found LOTS of HUGE spiders, and eventually, even I decided it was time to turn back when a spider the size of my hand almost landed in my hair—of course I did walk into his web in all fairness...but, when I pulled the web down, it was thick, and yellow and very strong, like real thread. Crrrreeeepy! We saw a couple of lizards, but the monkeys have still avoided us. It is funny, since the folks around here always say how many monkeys there are here—-and yet, we still haven’t seen them! After we returned from our jungle walk we made some taquitos and then headed out to the beach. We walked down to a more sandy beach where the kids swam for a good long time. We all did. Walking back we saw an iguana, actually, two, and countless crabs and hermit crabs. Then it was time to get out the kayaks. That was all Spencer was waiting for, and Audrey knew how to use them! Matt, Spencer and Audrey all spent a good amount of time kayaking around the bay area right in front of the house. Soon it was time for dinner, and the quiet activities of the evenings...which turned into watching a tremendous thunderstorm that lasted for an hour. It was very cool. Before long, Cade was asleep on Matt’s lap. Malena started reading Bunnicula, Spencer and Audrey were fighting over the hammock, and by 9pm we were all in bed asleep! |
