Today was an AWESOME day. We stayed close to home because we have such big plans tomorrow to go to the wildlife sanctuary, but the adventure was no less grand. Our big outing today was to go to the only restaurant in town. In the morning Lyn, the owner, came by to see how we were doing. We had a nice chat and got a lot of information about the area and various tours. We began the day with a huge beach walk. The kids played in the various tidal pools and we walked a long way around to the right of our beach. It was very rocky and a lot of fun. We saw all sorts of sea life in the tidal pool including a super cool starfish that had a very spiky exterior, and an anthropoid! The kids collected rocks on the beach for their friends, and we even saw a few lizards. We headed back to the house around noon and chilled for a little while before heading to lunch. Lunch was a little disappointing. We thought we would get some really great local cuisine, but instead got spaghetti with meat sauce. One of the draws for Matt and I was we could get real adult beverages with little umbrellas—but all that was offered was Lipton instant iced tea. While the food was good—six plates of spaghetti was hardly worth the 60$ they charged us—or the 88$ they TRIED to charge us. But, we did finally get to see some monkeys running through the trees, and that was very cool. The kids loved the parrot that was there. Her name was Lola and she could say “Hola” and do various other parrot tricks. Oddly, when we were ready to leave, this brindle looking dog showed up. We had decided to make the trek to King Louis Falls— a huge 110 ft waterfall that you can pay someone to let you repel off of. Well, that dog walked us all the way there, and all the way home. Even more odd, when we would pause, unsure of where to go, he would lead the way! He was awesome! We saw lots of animals along the way. Finally, we have seen our share of monkeys, and we also saw another toucan very high up in a tree. The only bad thing was, I did not bring my camera, but luckily I had Olivia’s underwater camera so I could still get some good pictures and videos of our adventure today. He ended up taking us straight to the falls, (which sadly were dry, but still spectacular) and then, he just sat patiently on the hillside until we were finished. Then, he led us back to the beach. We had discussed going to the beach and it was like the dog knew it. He walked us right to the beach! Matapalo beach was really amazing. It is more on the Pacific open ocean than the beach we are at so the waves are much bigger, and the water is a brilliant blue. The kids really liked walking on that beach, since it was pretty sandy, it was nice to let them see some big waves too. After looking at it, Matt and I were glad to have our little beach. There is no undertow and the waves are much less violent. Our dog guide led us back on the beach until we could not pass and then he cut us through someone’s property back toward the main road. We saw more monkeys, and when we got back to the restaurant the dog paused...let the kids pet and love him, then he merrily went back to the house he came from. He was a super cool dog. We loved having him as our guide! We finished our trek back home, made a quick taco dinner and are getting ready to settle in to bed. It is raining again, but the days are just beautiful! Now the kids are all playing their DS’s but, I have to say —they have earned it. We must have spent 6 hours today walking. Spencer almost didn’t complain on the falls walk...well, almost… Soon we are off to bed, ready for a BIG adventure tomorrow! Just think, we are sharing the tour with a couple on their honeymoon!! |
