Fort Pulaski
Text Box: In my effort to see the things of Savannah I never have...I took the kids to Fort Pulaski near Tybee Island. I have probably driven past it 1000 times, but never been inside. We spent a full day there, and really enjoyed it! The main claim to fame for Ft Pulaski was that it was the last brick fort. It took 18 years to build, and was occupied by the Confederates until the Union soldiers on Tybee Island launched an assault using new rifle powered canons. These more powerful cannons made quick work of the brick structure, and after that, no other fort was built from brick again.
Text Box: While Malena and Cade earned their Jr Ranger Badges, we explored the fort. There was even a musket demonstration, which was more than a thrill for Caden. He was ALL about the fort, the war, the soldier, the cannons, and his fine little union hat! On Sunday’s the soldier guy told us he wears Confederate grey to honor the people who were here when it was Confederate.
Text Box: And while all these bullets and uniforms thrilled my baby—you want to know what thrilled me? In the middle of the fort was a construction crew building odd buildings for the interior of a fort...One, actually looked like a hangmans station. Turns out, it WAS! Robert Redford is filming a movie in Savannah called “The Conspirator” and apparently Fort Pulaski is being transformed for the final scene of the movie! It was very cool to see how they made these ‘new’ structures look old. I really liked how they put the shingles on to make it look old. Clearly they weren’t going to be filming the building from the other side, because those shingles were just put on there normally. It was very cool.

See how they made the shingles look old and blown off?

Hinge where the floor will drop for the hanging

He was staining it to look old

Text Box: After we finished at the fort, we went on a 1.5 mile hike to the Cockspur Island Lighthouse. Now, the kids will tell you it wasn't worth the hike...since I failed to mention they would never actually reach the lighthouse. You have to travel to it by boat. But, we did get pretty close!
