The Ducks Take Flight!

This week, the ducks took flight.  They all were sort of surprised they could actually do it, but since it happened they have been taking short flights around the yard.    My personal favorite was the morning I let them out of the duck cage and  where they usually walk nicely behind me—-all four instead decided to fly right over my shoulders to go in front of me.

Audrey’s duck performs like a trained seal, and is still the sweetest and easiest to catch.  Below, you can see a video of Audrey’s duck in flight!

We’ve had some other excitement in our yard this past week.  At the beginning of the week the ducks decided they needed a new friend.  You see, those pesky koi fish are always nibbling their little ducky feet—so, when this “big duck” came by, they didn’t protest—no!  They moved on over and let him come in and clean out my pond.  He got a lot of the fish, and I thought he got my kio too, but a couple of days later I saw my big white koi (Fuji) who was hiding.  After this picture was taken I saw the black koi too—but have not seen him since.  I started out with about 40 goldfish and two large koi.  I now have counted about 8 goldfish, and one white koi.  And THAT is why you see sleds and poles going every which way across my pond...now you know!

Then there was the morning Audrey called me out because she saw this fella climbing up the tree.  We knew what he was after, but, we just could not stop him from getting the job done.  He climbed the tree in search of the Northern Flickers nest babies.  They hatched about 10 days  before, and he made quick work of them I am sorry to say.  The blue jays protested, but in the end, he made his way back down the tree with the signature lump in his belly.  He may have felt satisfied, but when he was picked up for a photo opt—I bet he got indigestion!
