Text Box: Monster Writing!Text Box: Home
Text Box: My friend Jennifer found this, and we have been having a lot of fun with it. Several other homeschool families have joined in, and it is a great way to teach descriptive writing to kids. The premise is, you write a detailed description of a monster you create after you draw it out. Your partner draws what they think you wrote, and you compare the drawings. Text Box: Based on these descriptions you can see what my kids came up with:

Text Box: Text Box: This was FUN! And, what is interesting to me, is the interpretation that took place...for example when Emily said “it has a green upside down triangle on its head” Audrey took that to mean topically on his head...as in a nose, since there wasn’t a nose mentioned...but the other two took it to mean a ‘party’ hat! We haven’t seen their drawings yet to know who came closest...but we have made our own monsters, and welcome anybody to do the same and share with us!
Text Box: Malena’s Monster:

It has a grey turtle shell body, 8 pointy legs that come out of the bottom. The tail is colourful, like a rainbow. The head is a backward C, with two pointed ears like a cat. It has two round eyes that are brown, a dark blue circle nose and a cat like brown mouth with one pointed tooth sticking out the middle. On its back, it has 5 dragon like scales on the front hump (the middle one is highest), and another tail on the back hump. That tail looks like a flower stem with leaves, but the ‘flower’ looks like the dragon scales in the front.

Text Box: Spencer’s Monster:

My monsters body is one large triangle divided into four smaller triangles, with an upside down triangle in the belly section (triforce). The outer triangles are yellow and the center triangle is clear. It has three legs that are black with rocket booster feet. It has two arms that are rainbow colored and rainbow colored wings. The left hand has two fingers with smiley faces on them, and the right hand has five fingers that also have smiley faces on them. They are all rainbow colored. My monster also has two wings that are rainbow stripes. The head is a circle with two circle ears with swirl marks that look like 9’s and 6’s. It has two cat like mouths it speaks Spanish. It has four eyes from left to right, the first is a yellow rectangle, the second is a green triangle, the third is a black circle and the fourth is a red star. On the lower part of his triangular body he has a port on each side that is a 2 inch thin rectangle and a square at the end. These are ‘sucker rays’ used to abduct the people of Stick Town.
