US History in a Nutshell

Part 2

Jamestown

Jamestown was our second stop on our tour of American History in a nutshell.  The Jamestown settlement was founded on May 14, 1607.  It is considered the ’first’ English settlement, because many before it failed.

In the Powhatan village the kids learned about how the Indians lived.  They walked inside the wigwams and felt the skins, and saw the handmade tools and how they were used.  Above, Cade is watching a “Powhatan” make fishing hooks from deer toe bones, and Spencer is learning basket making 101.  We went with our friends the Balmanos, so all the kids could discover this part of history together!

After the Indian village we boarded the ship!  This was Caden’s favorite part!  Spencer learned to steer the ship, (which was not done by a wheel until much later) Cade loaded the cannons while Audrey, Nick and Hayley were all taking a nap in the captain quarters.  They all posed for a picture topside.

On the way to the village, we learned about trade, and how to make a Powhatan dugout canoe, which is a slow and messy process!

In the village, the kids visited the buildings of the Jamestown settlement.  And learned about all the chores of living in colonial days.

Water buckets, armor, musket practice and water from the well were all part of the daily life in the settlement.

The kids had fun, and learned a lot!
