Hunting Island State ParkText Box: Without question, my favorite beach on the East coast is Hunting Island State Park. They say it is an untouched beach, that looks very much the way it did in the days of the pirates.
Text Box: The light station was a new area I had not explored in previous visits. It has a great history, including being left in ruins during the civil war, and being moved to its current location in the late 1800’s because of beach erosion. In the area are lots of original buildings from that period, including an old train line. Yes, Cade was happy!
DriftersText Box: Undoubtedly, the prettiest thing on this beach is the tons of driftwood. There are areas where the carcasses of trees look like dinosaur bones! The kids love climbing, playing and exploring these places. They found lots of little beach ‘critters’ living in and around these huge hunks of wood. And, while they may look as if they are just laying on the beach, believe me, they must go miles under the sand. They are very secure...don’t ask how I know.
Text Box: The kids explore the palms on the beach. Later, Spencer takes a pirate pose on the end of one of the huge branches.
Text Box: Of course, what beach experience would be complete without some boogie boarding and sand castle play? Spencer is fearless in the water, and does great riding the waves all day long. Malena mastered the drip castles on her vacation!
We also saw turtle nesting site, and the kids had a great time feeding some local birds Doritoes. Who knew cardinals liked them!
Fun in the SunText Box: If you ever find yourself in the area of Charleston or Beaufort you should take a day to go to Hunting Island,
but shhhhh don’t tell anyone...we don’t want others to know how great it is!
