Text Box: Decimal points and Fractions

It is always amazing to me, the things that I just never could seem to grasp in school I seem to have these amazing “AH-HA” moments with when I try to explain them to my own kids! Here is the ‘Ah-Ha’ moment of the day today!

Decimal points and fractions:

1 2 3 4 . 1 2 3

When you have numbers and decimal points, the decimal point is like a zero. As the numbers move away from the zero point (aka the decimal point) they get larger (in all directions). So, if you think of the four as always being “1’s” and the decimal point as being a zero, figuring out the . 1 2 3 is pretty simple.
The . is a zero, and the 1 is the tens meaning anything that is .1 is 1/10th
The . is the zero, and the 2 is in the 100’s meaning anything .12 is 12/100ths
The . is the zero, and the 3 is in the 1000’s, meaning anything .123 is 123/1000ths

So, if you can count back how many spaces from the decimal you are, you can easily convert decimals to fractions...and vice versa.
