Text Box: The Austrian Hospital
Must be where they got the term ‘hospitality’

Before & During

Just in case I had a boy, I needed the books.  This is Anna my midwife.  I always thought midwifes were a joke, until I had one.  I loved her!  She was the best.

After– The whole experience was calm.  I still remember when the dr came in, she had on a white cashmere sweater.  There were no bright lights, no nurses rushing about.  When Malena was born, we all just sat around talking while she just lay there calmly at the end of the bed.  Eventually, Dr. Shurtz made a call for the nursery to come get Malena and dress her.  One nurse came.  No pricks or pokes, they just dressed her.

This is what Malena spent her first 14 days of life in.  Look familiar?  Yes, it is indeed a grocery basket.  With the thickest down comforter you have even seen.  It was perfectly practical, and the down comforter came in handy since it was snowing!  From my window I could see the Votiv Kirche. (below)

Malena had jaundice.  Just like Audrey and Spencer before her, and she had it bad.  It took 14 days to get under control.  Hence the 14 day stay in the hospital.  In Austria, if baby stays...mom stays too.  I may not have always been able to read the menu items, but for 14 fabulous days I didn’t have to cook, clean or even change a diaper!  In fact, I never even saw her belly button until it had healed!

Her pacie says “I was born in Goldenen Kreuz hospital”

Babies are offered fennel tea, while mom’s are encouraged to have a beer a day.  One helps digestion, and the other helps the breast milk.

Before I knew it, my 14 days were up, and it was time to take Malena home.  I was very well rested by the time I got home.  Unfortunately, that didn’t last long!
