EARTHQUAKES

Seemed only reasonable to study Earthquakes after learning about all the tectonic plates on the earth’s surface.  So, we dove into earthquakes looking at these sites:

The BIG One!

History and Technology of Earthquakes

How to make a seismograph

The Earth from the Inside Out

Well, then we started thinking...the earth surface, previously expressed in pudding and graham crackers...what could we use to simulate earthquakes?  Let’s see...quake, shake, wiggle, giggle...watch it quake...no, watch it shake?  No.  Watch it wiggle?  OH!  That’s it!~  JELLO!  So, we built, and we watched it wiggle, saw it jiggle and wobble (although I don’t think that is part of the commercial!  Bill Cosby would be proud!

To the unhomeschooled mind, this may look like plain green Jello, but to a homeschool mind, this is Earth.

And this is MAN (and women) building infrastructure, buildings, society, and the likes.  Naturally, they have no idea “THE BIG ONE” is about to hit.

And they are happy in their accomplishments.  Occasionally, they feel the tremors, but tell themselves, it won’t really hit where they live, it won’t really bother the things they have made so beautiful.

Soon, more people come, because, it is, of course a beautiful place.  Who would not want to live in a land of cupcakes and cookies?  So, they populate.  And, apparently, they are lazy.  They don’t pay attention to codes, and are sleeping on the job.   That’s the thing about Gummi Bears...they’re lazy.

Until one day, when the whole earth begins to slide and shake...thing topple, the population is displaced and destruction abounds.  Now, truly, in today’s world most places which are targets for this kind of seismic activity build accordingly.  But, in the land of Jelloville...one can never count on the cleverness of the Gummi Bear.
